5 Shortlisted Entries of New Rupee Symbol by Govt. of India

Last year in April I had submitted my entry for Rupee symbol to the “Rupee symbol design contest” (which was there in sl.no. 76 in the first list of eligible entries ) . After a wait of more than a year the 5 designs are now shortlisted from the  2,500 entries that have been received from across the country.

4 out of 5 selected entries were from Mumbai and the fifth one is from Kerala.

However there were some interesting articles/press/posts/media stories I found :

http://img718.imageshack.us/img718/2905/18sec.jpg : This one states that each design was given approx 18 second to be evaluated!

http://yfrog.com/f/6h19marhindustanj/ This one states that there was spome kind of scam as the winners sent multiple entries where as it was restricted to only 2. also the jury never saw the background details and theme of the logo  which was the part of the contest guideline!(even here http://www.equitipz.com/2009/08/rupee-to-get-identification-symbol.html the commentary says that only the symbol design was presented to the jury!)

http://yfrog.com/f/3u22032010016j/ also states the similar story!

My Entry

Below are the Shortlisted designs by finance ministry

Now there is a new site called Save Indian Rupee Symbol at http://www.saveindianrupeesymbol.org/

which focuses on the possible scam in the design selection. As per this site:

  1. No records are available with Finance Ministry which could indicated, how many total design entries Finance Ministry had received ?
  2. Non-eligible candidate was shortlisted in top five finalists.
  3. One finalist was in contact with Finance Ministry and RBI prior to competition.
  4. Design concept or brief was not put in front of jury along with Indian Rupee symbol design.
  5. No marks or grades were allotted to selected (2644) candidates design entries, in the process of shortlisting top five finalist design entries.
  6. Jury had spends less than 20 seconds on each design entries to analyze it.
  7. One jury member from Ministry of Culture was absent on the day of final presentation.
  8. Three jury member were absent in two days long meeting dated 29th Sept. and 30th Sept. 2009
  9. All seven jury member had never meet in this whole selection process.

  1. RTI Against Symbol for Indian Rupee Design Competition Scam

By profession I am concept head and brand strategy planner… in my career I launched national as well international brands
What I noticed and learned is… failing of brand and not getting recognised in market as a brand ….
Not only depends upon how you marketed that brand….but also how much efforts your creative powerhouse taken to create that image…
So to create a successful brand identity the whole process of brainstorming and vibes of designers should be clear from all kind doubt and blames.
But its oposit here in designing of rupee symbol case, whole process came under doubts from the day one because of its very confusing and unclear guidelines.
And lately RTI filed by someone from design field which exposed other discrepancies in short listing process too. More than 800 shortlisted entries were never been published in public domain…. while declaring eligible number of shortlisted design entries.
So, finally I set with my advocate and drafted down below Open RTI application… which any one of you could file it..
It takes us 3 working days to understand what really going and finally drafted all our queries on paper.
We divided queries in 4 separate RTI’s because some time authorities rejected RTI application by saying you are asking too much information.
RTI is a best tool to fight bureaucracy and injustice …making an application under RTI and asking for specific information, the department has to furnish the information within 1 month. If the applicant is not happy or all the information asked for is not provided then an appeal lies to appellate authority designated in that department.
Later on this becomes the base for filing a suit in the court.
Let me make it very clear here guys we the Young and creative mind of India is not so dull to follow a mute justice!!
We are lucky to have one last chance, as a RTI ….to make some positive change for the betterment of our Currency symbol design and by participating in this exercise we can get our dignity back…
    So guys file RTI Now…

  2. Out Of Top Five Finalist 4 Are Under Scanner because :

    1. Hitesh Padamshali is a creative director, design, at JWT’s Mumbai office.

    2. Shahrukh J Irani is a creative director at Publicis Ambience.

Above both worked for very influential Creative MNC agencies with full political back support. Winning this design competition means more business for them.

3.D. Udaya Kumar already told Deccan Chronically that he submitted 4 design entries and according to Finance ministry you can only submit 2 entries. So technical he should be disqualified according to guidelines .

    4. Nondita Correa-Mehrotra – She told Economictimes that back in 2005 she written to the RBI regarding we should have a symbol for the rupee… Even Economictimes in its article mentioned “one of the finalists, more marvelling at the coincidence of it all than implying it may have influenced the government.”.

Update u guys ASAP i draft final copy of RTI.
